A filter press comprises a continuous filter cloth 25 which passes over upper rollers 27 and lower rollers 26 mounted on the elements 6 and passes through washing vessel 16. The filter cloth is moved by rotating rollers 26 and 27 by the action of chains 41 and 42 on sprockets 39 attached to the ends of the rollers. The elements 6 comprise outlets 50. Members 34 act to separate elements 6 when the press is opened.
