Vanadium oxytrialcoholates having the general formula in which R is an alkyl or cycloalkyl group, are prepared by reacting vanadium pentoxide with the appropriate alcohol in the presence of a catalyst which is an inorganic or organic acid having a dissociation constant (or a first dissociation constant if more than one) greater than 10-3 under anhydrous conditions. Suitable catalysts include organic sulphonic acids and sulphuric acid. The reaction is preferably effected at the boiling temperature of the reaction mixture for from¢ to 8 hours.
