[Also in Division G2] A polymer containing (N-substituted) maleimide repeating units is made by reacting a polymer containing non-N-substituted maleimide repeating units represented by Formula I: in which of R‹ and R1 is H or an alkyl group, with a compound containing a primary amine group which is benzylamine, aminoethanol, 4- aminobutyraldehyde diethylacetal or 2-hydroxyethyl hydrazine or which is represented by Formula II: in which each of R3 and R4 is a C 1-7 alkyl group or R3 and R4 together with the group Q represent the atoms necessary to form a tertiary nitrogen-containing cyclic group, R2 is an aminoalkylene group or an alkylene group, m is 0 or 1 and Q is a nitrogen atom or a | | -CH- group provided that when Q is -CH-, R3 and R4 together with the group Q represent the atoms necessary to complete a tertiary nitrogen-containing heterocyclic group and that | m may be 0 only when Q is -CH-. In the examples, maleimide homopolymers or copolymers with n-butyl vinyl ether or styrene are reacted with benzylamine, aminoethanol, 4- aminobutyraldehyde diethyl acetal, 2-hydroxyethylhydrazine, N,N - dimethylaminopropylamine and N,N-dimethylpropylenediamine, and in Example 6 a polymer was quaternized with methyl p-toluenesulphonate.
