REEL SUPPORT SPINDLE

[Also in Division G2] An adapter 36 for accommodating a super 8 film reel 50 is axially slidable on a post 8 between an operative position to which it is urged by a spring 62 and in which the reel can be mounted on the adapter, and an inoperative position to which it is shifted by abutment with a standard 8 reel on sliding this reel on to the post. In its inoperative position the adapter is received within a housing 14 which is fast with the post 8. Both types of reel are located axially in one direction by abutment with the end of the housing 14; in the other direction the standard 8 reel is retained by a detent spring 26 having curved ends 28, 30 projecting through slots 32 in the post. The spring 26 also holds the adapter in its operative position, the ends 28, 30 entering slots 42 in the adapter and/or the end 28 engaging a pin 38 fast with the adapter and extending through slots 40 in the post. The adapter has spring detents 46 mounted therein and having curved ends 48 projecting from slots 42 to retain a super 8 reel on the adapter. The post is coupled to a shaft 19 by a rim 16 on the housing 14 which is frictionally engaged by one or more lips 24 of a spring 22 mounted on the shaft. The adapter and the super 8 reel 50 are coupled to the post by an axially slidable element 52 which is drivingly connected to the housing 14 by radial lugs extending into axial notches in the housing and having drive teeth 60 engaging complementary drive slots in the reel 50 and engaging axially extending peripheral grooves 61 in the adapter. The adapter is formed with facial teeth engageable with complementary drive slots in the standard 8 reel when it is mounted on the post.
