Shoe bottoms are moulded on to uppers in a mould comprising a sole member 4 surrounded by two side members 16 which, in the mould closed position, are brought into mutual abutment and engage a gasket 10. Welt plates 18 on the side members engage an upper on a vertically reciprocable foot form 60 at the feather line thereof to complete the mould closure. With the mould thus closed, sealing assemblies 22, 32 on opposite sides of the mould, each comprising a plate 25 carrying a rubber sealing member 28 contoured to the feather line of the upper, are moved inwardly whereby the edges of the rubber members engage the upper and are deflected downwards to provide a seal between the welt plates and the upper. Further sealing assemblies 36, 46 are located at the opposed ends of the upper.
