Heading B3F. Cooling members for furnaces are made by casting molten iron about steel pipes placed in moulds. The steel pipes are first coated with a refractory material to prevent carbonization by the iron. The refractory composition exemplified contains (in wt. per cent): and water to give a density in the range 1À4 to 1À6 gm./cm.3. The iron is poured at 1180‹ to 1250‹ C. If desired, the steel pipes may be painted, before coating with refractory, with the following composition (in wt. per cent).
