A DEVICE FOR PULLING A SLAB FROM A MOULD OF A VERTICAL-TYPE MACHINE FOR CONTINUOUS CASTING OF METAL

A continuous slab 1 is drawn from a vertical mould 2 by bars in two groups, which alternately grip the slab to lower it and release it to return upwards, one group lowering while the other rises; the bars each comprising an upper portion 3 or 31 connected by a hinge joint 5 or 6 to a lower portion 4 or 41 loaded by springs 19 for slab-gripping and being raised and lowered by cam drives 23 and moved to and from the slab 1, for grip and release, by driven crankshafts 7 supported at their ends by rolls 10 urged by springs 22 to bear on vertical guides 11. The bars 3, 4 of one group are interdigitated, Fig. 2, with the bars 31, 41 of the other group. The springs 22 also urge end extensions 14 of the bars 3, 4 and 31, 41 against rolls 12, 16. The bottom rolls 16 (at least one to each bar) are mounted on two shafts 17 each supported by an adjustable and spring-loaded slide 18 which may also be moved by hydraulic pistons 20 for allowing the springs 22 to draw the lower bar portions 4, 41 apart. The hinge joints each include a cylindrical projection on one bar portion and a complementary cavity in the other, Fig. 4 (not shown).
