A taximeter having fare indicating means actuated by time and/or distance drives and means for automatically varying the rate of actuation of the indicating means on reaching a predetermined fare, includes a cam 61 advanced according to the progress of time or distance and arranged to complete the circuit to an indicator, e.g. lights 16, 16A, at a position corresponding approximately to the predetermined fare. Illumination of lights 16, 16A thus indicates the charging of a different tariff. When the
