A phosphor is of formula M 2 O.6Al 2 O 3 : xEu2+, yMn2+ wherein M is Na or K, x is 0À016 to 0À28 and y is 0 to 0À76. The alkali metal #-alumina may be prepared by dry blending EuF 3 and MnF 2 with powdered α or γ alumina and NaF or KF at approximately 1180‹ C. (e.g. 1150‹ C., 1250‹ C.) in hydrogen for three hours. Phosphors specified include K 2 O.6Al 2 O 3 : O.- 096Eu2+, 0À35Mn2+; Na 2 O.6Al 2 O 3 : 0À096 Eu2+, -0À35Mn2+; K 2 O.6Al 2 O 3 : 0À096 Eu2+; Na 2 O.- 6Al 2 O 3 : 0À096 Eu2+. Green and blue emissions by U.V. and electrons are disclosed. The incorporation of other activators Ce, Sn, Cu, Pb does not enhance the emission. Tb, Ho, Dy or Sm actuators do not yield detectable luminescence.
