An explosive composition contains a fusible aromatic nitro compound and, as a desensitizing agent, a wax obtained by chlorinating naphthalene and refining the product. The wax dissolves in the nitro compound and provides compositions of higher density than similar compositions containing paraffin wax. The aromatic nitro compound may be TNT, used alone or in conjunction with Al powder, hexogen, tetryl, or PETN; in one example the explosive composition contains tetryl, hexogen, and trinitrobenzene. Paraffin wax may supplement the chlorinated wax.
