A composition for treating peptic ulcers comprises a carrier and a lignosulphonic acid or a salt thereof capable of reducing pepsin proteolysis in the body and having no significant blood anti-coagulant activity. Suitable materials are those sold under the Trade Mark "Peritan". The compositions may also include anti cholinergic agents, e.g. glycopyrrolate, analgesics, tranquilizers, sedatives, adsorbants and antacids, e.g. dihydroxy aluminium aminoacetate. A process of obtaining lignosulphonates of a sufficient degree of purity is referred to wherein a crude product, e.g. waste sulphite liquors, is contacted with chrome tanned hide and the required material is subsequently eluted therefrom. Fractionation of the purified material on a celite (Trade Mark) column to produce fractions having the required activity is also described.
