A locating device, for workpieces having conducting and non-conducting regions, e.g. printed circuit boards from which units are to be cut by a guillotine, comprises at least one pair of conducting probes 3, 4 controlling via a relay an electrically actuated clamp, and means for further locating a workpiece 5. The relay is actuated when the probes 3, 4 are so positioned that the electric circuit between them is completed by the conductive layer 7 protruding from the workpiece. The further locating means may comprise a second pair of probes or a guide for locating the workpiece edge. With a fluid pressure guillotine, a piston/cylinder hold down unit may supplement the clamp, and the relay may be arranged to operate the cutter automatically.
