Varnishes.-In the preparation of varnish having a halogen derivative of india-rubber, gutta-percha, or balata as its base, alkyl, alkylene, alkenyl, or aryl halides are used as solvents in the process described in Specification 1894/15, [Class 70, India-rubber &c.], according to which only solvents are used which do not react with chlorine, and in the process described in Specification 121,194, in which sulphuryl chloride, a mixture of chlorine and bromine or bromine followed by chlorine is used as the halogenating agent. Suitable halides are trichlorethylene and tetrachlorethane.
