A process for the preparation of 1,3-diamino- 2-propanol comprises reacting epichlorohydrin with an excess of an aqueous highly concentrated ammonia solution, the reaction mixture being cooled until the exothermic reaction is complete, adding a strong alkali in a quantity at least equivalent to the chlorine content, and finally isolating the diaminopropanol formed.
