[Also in Division C4] Boric acid or boron fluoride complexes of 1,4- dihydroxy anthraquinones are chlorinated in the α-position with a mixture of oleum and chlorosulphonic acid, thionyl chloride or sulphuryl chloride in the presence of a halogenation catalyst and in the absence of substantial quantities of gaseous chlorine. The catalyst is preferably iodine or a compound which yields iodine under the reaction conditions.
