In the manufacture of polyesters by (a) effecting a transesterification reaction between a dialkyl terephthalate (e.g. dimethyl terephthalate) and a glycol (e.g. ethylene glycol) and (b) polycondensing the resulting glycol ester, zinc formate is used as the transesterification catalyst. Antimony oxide or antimony acetate may be used as the polycondensation catalyst.
