In a conventional flooding process for the recovery of petroleum hydrocarbons a slug of of a soluble oil is injected which comprises 20 to 80 percent hydrocarbons, 0.01 to 10 percent of an oil-soluble, substantially water-insoluble co-surfactant, 2 to 20 percent of one or more surfactants and 5 to 70 percent of water. The co-surfactants are higher aliphatic alcohols, phenols, aryl alcohols and polyalkylene oxides.
