Apparatus for the automatic control of desalting and dehydrating of crude petroleum in electric dehydrators comprises a current transducer 11 in the circuit of a lower electrode system 6 of the dehydrator 1, the transducer 11 being connected via a regulator 12 to a control valve 5 in a line 4 used to discharge water and sludge 14 from the dehydrator the valve 5 being operated in dependence upon current variatons as detected by the transducer 11 so as to maintain a constant current in the circuit of the electrode system 6 by discharging water and sludge in a controlled manner from the dehydrator.
