Apparatus for charging ingots into inductive melting coils in a melting chamber where a protective atmosphere is provided comprises a sealed chamber 7 communicating with the melting chamber through an aperture 12 closed by slide 8, a magazine 9 comprising a slotted cantilever frame 16 on which the ingots are supported by their heads 20, a pusher 10 by which an ingot can be transferred to the grip 11 of a lifting device by which the ingot is lowered into a melting coil, and a compartment 25 receiving ingot ends 27. The frame 16 has a-slot 19 and is mounted on an axle 17, by which it can be swung through a side doorway of the chamber 7 for recharging by a winch (28, Fig. 1) disposed above said chamber 7. The grip 11 is formed with a slot 23 aligned with slot 19 to receive the next ingot which pushes off ingot head 27 into compartment 25. Said grip 11 is supported in cantilever fashion by a rod 13 on a rod 14 raised and lowered by a screw mechanism (15, Fig. 1). The pusher 10 is operated by a fluid motor outside the chamber 7. A charging apparatus is provided for each of the several inductive melting coils in the melting chamber.
