Carboxylic esters having the formula whose R denotes an n-alkyl or n-alkylbenzyl group (8-20C), R1 and R111 denote n-alkyl groups (1-4C) and R11 denotes an n-alkyl group (3-5C), are prepared by conventional esterification processes from the appropriate 2 - hydroxymethyl - 2 - (R) - 1,3 - propanediol and 2,2-dialkyl carboxylic acid. Examples describe the preparation of esters from 2- hydroxymethyl - 2 - decyl - 1,3 - propanediol and 2,2-dimethyl pentanoic acid and 2-hydroxymethyl - 2 - nonyl - 1,3 - propanediol and 2,2-dimethyl pentanoic acid.
