A vacuum pumping system has a main evacuation line 16 through which an article 14 is evacuated by a vacuum pump assembly 10 after the pump assembly has produced a preliminary vacuum through a bypass line 24, 30, 32, 28, 22 containing a filter screen 40. The assembly 10 may comprise a mechanical pump and a diffusion pump. A solenoid operated valve plate 52 closed the main line 16 during preliminary evacuation by the mechanical pump and the filter 40 prevents particles in the article 14 from entering the pump assembly. At the end of preliminary pumping the valve 52 is opened, the machanical pump is isolated, and the diffusion pump is operated. Particles caught on the screen are collected in a trap 46 having a removable cover 48. To remove small particles the by-pass line is coated with grease.
