Saturated aliphatic ketones are prepared by contacting a gaseous and/or vaporous mixture containing water, a saturated aliphatic aldehyde, the alkyl group of which contains from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, and a saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, the alkyl group of which contains from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, with a solid catalyst comprising an oxide of manganese or a compound of manganese that forms an oxide of manganese on heating supported on activated alumina, at a temperature and for a contact time such that the ketone is formed.
