Production of Aliphatic Ketones

Saturated aliphatic ketones are prepared by passing a gaseous and/or vaporous stream containing water and a saturated aliphatic aldehyde having from 1 to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl group or a mixture of such saturated aliphatic aldehydes in contact with a solid catalyst comprising an oxide of lanthanum or a compound of lanthanum that is converted to an oxide of lanthenum on heating and, if desired, at least one oxide of an element having an atomic number from 58 to 71 inclusive, or a compound of such an element that forms an oxide on heating at a temperature and for a contact time such that a ketone is formed in said stream.
