The hull of a carrier of liquefied gases having conventional metallic bow 14 and stern 16 portions comprises a concrete cargo hold midportion 12 fastened between the bow and stern portions and having prestressed cables 28 which hold the concrete mid-portion in compression. In the embodiment described the concrete mid-portion has four tanks 18 each with a liquid-impervious lining comprising thermal insulation system 36 lined by flexible metallic membranes 54. Steel bulkheads 32 of the bow and stern portions act as anchorages for cables 28.
