The invention comprises esters (I) of 5- methoxy-(or 5-dimethylamino)-2-methylindole- 3-acetic acid with RR1R2CCH 2 OH, where R is halogen and R1, R2 are each H, halogen, alkyl, aralkyl, (possibly substituted) phenyl or substituted benzyl, and 1-(p-chlorobenzoyl) derivatives (II) of said esters. The esters I, prepared directly from the corresponding acid and alcohol, are reacted in the form of their 1-alkali metal salts with a halide, anhydride, azide or p-nitrophenyl ester of p-chlorobenzoic acid to give II, and the latter may be reacted with Zn/alkanoic acid to give 1-(p-chlorobenzoyl)-5-methoxy-(or 5-dimethylamino)-2- methylindoleacetic acid.
