[Also in Division E2] In a freight container, e.g. for shipping, a lid 6, Fig. 2, has a rubber seal 22 in a channel 20 to engage with an upstanding rib 16 recessed in the top of the container wall 8. Small pipes 24 are provided in this top wall 8 for drainage. Depressions 26, Fig. 4, around the circumference of the lid 6 contain locking devices comprising a hand-lever 50 with a ball head 72 at one end to fit into a rubber-lined housing 64 in the unlocked position. At the other end, as shown, the lever 50 forms a U-shaped portion 48 which carries a pair of pins 52 to fit into bearing slots 54 in the locked position, and is connected by a hinged link 42 to a pivoted locking bolt 40. The locking bolt 40 may have a flat face or an oblique spring-baised lug (84), Fig. 5 (not shown), to engage with a pocket 58 in the top frame 8 of the container. Additional transverse locks, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown), each consist of a lever (96) pivoted to mounting plates (92) and to a pull rod (100) having a hammer shaped bolt head to engage with a pocket (102) in the container frame 8. In another embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), the upper cross spar of a door in the container end wall is attached to the lid and an adjustable length locking bar 112, Fig. 10, is positioned to bring the opposed container walls into correct spatial alignment before closing the door. The locking bar 112 comprises a tube 122 joined to the container frame by pivoted links and with a screw spindle 134 for adjusting the bar length by rotation of the bar, using rods inserted into holes 140. After it is disconnected, the locking bar 112 is pivoted about axes 138, 118 to lie in recesses 114. Lifting eyelets 74, Fig. 4, are provided in the locking sockets. |
