A ship has a hold 13 into which a barge-like container or " podule " 12 can be floated, is able to act as a floating dry dock for podules and incorporates sufficient ballast tanks to enable her state of flotation to be adjusted so that podules can be floated in and out at any state of load, and has a " visor bow " 10B which comprises a complete fore part to the vessel extending as far aft as the fore end of the cargo hold. The visor bow, which in its lowered position fits on to a projecting part 28 of the double bottom 15 of the main hull 10 and is secured to the latter by hydraulically operated bolts 185, 185 2 , 185 3 , 18B 1 , can be raised by hydraulic rams turning it about hinges 175 at main deck level. |
