An adhesive applying device e.g. for use in a shoe lasting machine, consists of a chamber for receiving adhesive, means for feeding adhesive to the chamber so as to meter a quantity of adhesive therein, a nozzle member comprising at least one outlet passage communicating with the chamber, and means for supplying a blast of air under pressure to the chamber to expel the metered quantity of adhesive therefrom through the nozzle member. As described a piston and cylinder 307 raises a spool valve 311 for a predetermined length of time so that a metered quantity of adhesive is fed from an inlet 337 through passages 343 into a bore 345 in the valve 311. The adhesive is maintained in molten pondition by a heater 357. A valve (not shown) is then operated to feed compressed air from an inlet 359 through passages 363 into the bore 345 so that the adhesive is expelled through outlet ports 333.
