[Also in Divisions H2 and H5] During electroslag remelting of a consumable electrode 1 in a cooled mould 2 using a.c. and a transformer 3, the amplitude of the a.c. is varied by means 4 or 4' (see Division H2), connected in the primary or secondary winding circuit of the transformer 3, at a low frequency equal to or near the frequency of resonance of the liquid metal bath, such that resonance oscillations or stirring of the liquid metal occurs and an ingot with more uniform properties results.
