Heading F4B. In a tubulous fluid heating furnace having gas/liquid fuel burners 5 delivering over radiant walls 6, the radiant walls comprise metal boxes 7 divided into chambers 8 by partitions 9 and carrying perforated ceramic panels 10 through which air is delivered to the flame. The air supply to each box is controlled so as to control the temperature distribution within the furnace. The radiant walls may be a central structure within the furnace or form the side walls of the furnace. An air/gas mixture may be fed through the perforated ceramic panels, and may burn within the panels to increase their radiation.
