An automatic clamping device for clamping a measuring rod 4 axially slidable in a predetermined unit of time, and provided with a graduated seal, comprises two clamping jaws 3 pivotally mounted at one end in a common bearing 10 and each provided with an oblique surface 31 at the other end, a recess 311 in each jaw 4 intermediate the ends thereof to substantially embrace the rod 4 transversely of the jaws, a spring-urged pressure piece 2 co-operating with the oblique surfaces 31 so as to close the jaws and produce a clamping action on the rod, the pressure piece being movable by means of an electromagnet 7 against the spring 1 to release the clamping action on the rod 4. As shown the recesses 311 are lined with a braking material.
