An apparatus for developing electrostatic images comprises a container 10 for liquid developer, rollers 13, 14 for conveying an image bearing member through the container, and an electrically conductive roller 18 within the container in a position adjacent the path of the image bearing side of the carrier. A second conductive roller 17 is spaced from the roller 18. The roller 18 is stated to increase the deposit of developer particles by influencing the electric field. A cleaning pad 19 of foamed plastic is urged against the roller 17 to remove adhering particles. The roller 17 may be replaced by an insulating roller if a lower density of development is sufficient. The developer may be a dispersion of carbon black or alkyd resin in an aliphatic solvent.
