Synthetic Resin Composition

A composition comprises a siliceous material and 2 to 20 wt. per cent of a binding agent comprising an alkyd resin based on a polycarboxylic acid, a polyhydric alcohol and a branched monocarboxylic acid wherein the -COOH is bound to a tertiary or quaternary carbon atom plus a curable melamine-, urea- or phenolformaldehyde resin. The composition is suitable for decorative outer layers of building panels or tiles for exterior use. In use, the specified ingredients with or without pigments and/or other fillers are mixed with a liquid which evaporates during curing which may be effected at 100‹ to 220‹ C. In the example, a porous moulded article is made from river sand (packed density 1À73 g./ml., void content 38%) and 2-10% by wt. of a 70/30 mixture of proprietary alkyd and melamine resins as solutions in xylene and butanol respectively.
