[Also in Division C2] A method of carrying out heterogeneous liquid phase reactions comprises atomizing the reactants separately or in admixture by means of an atomizer having at least one slit aperture wherein the slit has width not more than 2mm and length greater than its width, conducting the spray of liquid reactants into a reaction chamber and removing the reaction product from the reaction chamber. One of the liquids may be a catalyst. The reaction may be carried out in the atomizer shown, in which liquid reactant introduced into jacketed space 10 is forced by gas or liquid from tube 5 through adjustable slit 3 as an atomized spray. Alternatively liquid reactant may be passed through tube 5 only. The width of slit 3 is altered by adjusting the angle formed by articulated suspended side-plates 2; the vertical position of wedge 4 is adjusted by operating knob 6. Examples refer to reaction of dodecyl benzene with H 2 SO 4 /SO 3 to give dodecyl benzene sulphonate, nitration of benzene with H 2 SO 4 HNO 3 , reaction of sodium phenolate with benzoyl chloride to give phenol benzoate, saponification of sunflower oil. Other reactions are mentioned.
