A selective printer having one or more typecarriers 1, mounted on a common stationary shaft 4 and attached thereto by spiral springs 5, which drive the type carriers in the character selecting direction and which are tensioned by a common bail 12 which restores the set type carriers, is provided with a character selecting mechanism for each type carrier, the mechanism including a pulse generator 10 controlled electromagnet 9 whose winding is energized an appropriate number of times to rock a spring 8 biased anchor pawl 7 to cause the type carrier to be displaced through a number of tooth spaces on a gear segment 3 in order to present the selected character opposite a platen 11. Platen impression arrangements.-The platen 11, which supports a recording medium, is moved against the type carrier or carriers normally to its longitudinal axis to effect impression of the selected character or characters on the recording medium.
