Dehydrohalogenation catalysts are made by contacting an oxide of MgO, CaO or ZnO with an aqueous solution of a cuprihydroxycarboxylate of an alkali or alkaline earth metal (including Be and Mg) such that the final catalyst will contain 0.1 to 15% Cu as CuO, drying and calcining to yield a composite. The examples describe the preparation of MgOCuO composites. Drying may be effected at 95-225‹C, and calcination at 400-800‹C, if desired in an inert atmosphere.
