An automatic central buffer coupling for rail vehicles comprises a support 27 adjustable in length and pivoted at 27a to a coupling shaft 17 pivoted to a lever system 12 which is pivoted at 25 to a telescopic spring assembly S pivoted at 23 to the vehicle frame 13, and which is mounted on a sleeve 3 itself pivoted on a vertical pivot pin 11 to the frame 13, the sleeve 3 having a flange 4 supporting a telescopic spring assembly 1, 2, 9 and 10 normally held bodily by claws 14, 15 locked by pawls 20, 20a, so that the coupling shaft 17 is centralized after horizontal deflection, but the pawls 20, 20a being retractable by means of shaft 18 to allow the assembly 1, 2, 9, 10 to swing freely to assist coupling on curved sections of track. A ring member 8 extends through slots 7 in the cylinders 1 and 2 and supports the spring 9.
