A shoe upper U is prepared for lasting by being mulled and pressed against a heated metal platen 2 formed with ribs 4 radiating from a central substantially flat area 6 by a resilient presser pad (not shown) having an operative surface complementary, or substantially so, to that of the platen. The platen is preferably aluminium and is heated to 100‹-120‹C. and the presser pad comprises silicone rubber.
