Heading C2C] Production of 2,2-dimethylpropan-3-ol- 1-al by passing isobutyraldehyde and aqueous formaldehyde downwards over a basic ion exchange resin in carbonate form contained in a column having a length to diameter ratio of more than 5: 1 and which is kept at a temperature of from 85‹ to 100‹ C. In the preferred process 0À5 to 3À0 moles of formaldehyde are used per mole of isobutyraldehyde. The ion exchangers are obtained in conventional manner from commercial polyvinylbenzylammonium, polyalkylenimine and polyalkylenamine resins containing hydroxyl groups by treating with aqueous carbonate ions and washing with water.
