A machine for opening, cleaning and blending fibrous material, e.g. cotton direct from bales 2 comprises a device, such as a trolley 1, for horizontally reciprocating the bales, an arrangement such as drums 4 with spiked or sawlike fittings for picking up the fibres and means for vertically moving the fibre-picking means. As shown, the drums 4 are mounted on a platform vertically movable on guides 17, 18 by a hydraulic arrangement 19-24. As the bales 2 are used up the platform 3 moves downwards under its own weight, the rate of descent being controlled by valve 22. Beneath each drum is a grid which is reciprocated parallel to the axis of the drum by a drive taken from the drum shaft (Fig. 2 not shown). The drums are enclosed by casing 7 which includes mote knives 8. Impurities from the mote knives are drawn off along tubes 32 to a chamber 33 while the opened fibres are fed to a tube 9 connected to casing 7 by a telescopic mounting. When the bales 2 have been exhausted, platform 3 is raised by the hydraulic drive so that trolley 1 can be moved out, recharged, and replaced under the platform.
