Novel sodium and potassium salts of formula wherein R is H, alkyl or alkoxymethyl, Z is Na or K and n is 1 or 2 are prepared by reacting a solution of an above compound wherein Z = H in an organic solvent, e.g. acetone or the liquor from a previous batch, with an alcoholic solution of NaOH or KOH preferably with the exclusion of CO 2 from the reaction mixture. Sterile solutions possesing chemotherapeutic activity preferably for intravenous administration, though they may be administered orally or by another parenteral route, comprise an above novel salt and an isotonic physiological solution of NaCl preferably in the ratio of 1 : 500 to 1500 parts by weight.
