A crank-shaft seal comprises a synthetic rubber ring having an outer holding annulus 1 reinforced by a metal ring insert 2 and an inner sealing flange 3 urged inwardly by a garter spring 9 and having a sealing lip formed on its inner periphery by two frusto-conical surfaces 4 and 5, the surface 5 having moulded therein a multi-start thread 6 which meets the lip edge 7 at two or more points and of which more than two crests are intersected by any radial section through the ring. In use, the thread acts to feed back leakage oil. The ring is preferably of silicone synthetic rubber, e.g. methyl vinyl polysiloxane compounded with fillers and curing agents.
