A multi-stage rotary fluid-flow machine, e.g. a pump or turbine, is constructed from a number of the units shown, the stator blades 8 together with member 7 and an extension 15 of an adjacent unit defining helical fluid-flow passages. These passages diverge in the direction of pumped flow. The average helix angle is approximately 10 degrees. The blades 8 may be angularly adjustable. The units can be clamped together without bolting unit to unit.
