An artificial arm, having a socket to be fitted to a shoulder stump and an elbow joint 3 operated by a body harness 10, 11, comprises also an electric motor and gearing 7 used to move, with levers 16, the fingers and thumb, the motor being operated by an external source of 'power in dependence on bioelectric signals received from the shoulder stump via electrodes 2. As shown, the arm includes a further motor and mechanism 8 used to rotate the wrist also in dependence on signals received from the electrodes 2. The arm is provided with an electronic circuit 5 (Figures 3 and 5, not shown) including two amplifiers (12, 14) and a converter (13) which transforms the bio-electric signal to a suitable form.
