In a method of manufacturing hollow metal articles metal strips are unwound from reels 1 and butt-welded together at their edges to form a sheet at upper welding heads 2. The adjoining edges are milled by devices 4 before welding. If required, the joints on the reverse side of the sheet are welded by further welding heads 2 before the joints are trimmed by devices 5. The leading edge of the sheet is fastened to a winding drum 3 or may be fixed to a pipe, which remains in the finished article after it has been wound. In an alternative embodiment the strips are welded together by welding heads on one side only of the sheet, there being copper cooling shoes under each head. In this embodiment the drum 6 is not provided.
