To ensure a constant take-up speed of glass fibres, rope or yarn on a bobbin 4 a toothed rack 14 supports a roller 12, the roller 12 being biassed by a spring 15 towards the bobbin 4. As the package on the bobbin 4 increases in diameter the roller 12 is moved towards the rack 14 to close the contacts 16. Closure of contacts 16 cause a motor 17 to be energized to perform two separate functions, namely:- (a) adjust the setting of a friction disc 8 relatively to a friction disc 9 to slow down the rate of revolution of the bobbin 4; and (b) rotate a drive member 20 coupled to the rack 14 to cause the rack 14 to move away from the roller 12. When the rack 14 has moved slfficiently away from the roller 12 the contact 16 open and the motor 17 stops. A motor 7 drives the friction disc 8.
