In a boiling water reactor, the coolant is forced to circulate upwards through the vertical fuel elements. Deflectors in the coolant stream, between the fuel elements, induce helical flow lines in the coolant flow. The circulation velocity is adjusted so as to produce a lateral centrifugal acceleration in the coolant greater than a selected value. The arrangement is suitable for marine reactors which are subjected to changing accelerations which would otherwise tend to disturb the coolant distribution in the core region. In the embodiment described the deflectors are formed of helically twisted strips, the pitch of the twist being a function of the coolant velocity.
