Apparatus for controlling the thickness of a paper sheet passing through a calender comprises a series of nozzles 18 rotatably mounted on a fluid chamber 12 extending the length of a calender roll, the nozzles being able to direct cooling fluid on to any longitudinal point of the roll to decrease the thickness of the roll at that point and thereby increase the thickness of the paper sheet at the point. Each nozzle is adjustably secured by screws to a swivel base 44, and has a valve comprising a piston block connected to a handle 40 chamber 12 may be mounted on a conventional doctor back.
