An aluminium alloy trunk piston 10 has arcuate inserts 26 of a semi-porous metal, e.g. cast iron or cold-rolled steel, which are cast integrally with the piston in recesses formed in the external surface of the skirt 14 at the thrust areas between the gudgeon pin bosses 16 and have inwardly flared longitudinal edges 30 to lock the inserts in position. The edges 30 are provided with holes 32 which are filled with the piston metal during casting. The piston is intended for use in an internal combustion engine cylinder having an aluminium alloy wall.
