L(-) and D( + ) 1,α,α-Trimethyl-2-piperidyl carbinol diphenylacetate (including salts thereof, e.g. the hydrochloride) are obtained by resolution of the racemate. The examples describe a separation using D( + ) and L(-) tartaric acid. Pharmaceutical preparations showing anaesthetic activity contain as active ingredient the above L(-) and D(+) piperidyl compounds; administration is, e.g. endovenously or subcutaneously.
